Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh: Tamanna Malik, a Muslim woman from Badanpur Basei village in Asmoli, Sambhal, has made headlines for carrying out a Kanwar pilgrimage from Haridwar while wearing a burqa. Tamanna undertook the journey with her husband, Aman Tyagi, following the fulfillment of a vow she had made prior to their marriage. The couple performed Jalabhishek on the Shiva Linga at the ancient Kshemanath temple in Naimisharanya on the occasion of Mahashivratri.
Her actions have sparked controversy, drawing criticism from Samajwadi Party MP Ziaur Rahman Bark and All India Muslim Jamaat leader Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi. Bark questioned her choice, arguing that having converted to another religion, she should not participate in a Hindu religious ritual wearing a burqa. Razvi echoed this view, stating that followers of Islam should not partake in rituals of other religions, labeling such acts as impermissible under Shariah law.
Tamanna Malik Responds
Tamanna Malik hit back at her critics, asserting that Islam is not hers to follow exclusively, and that people are free to choose their own religious practices. She said, “I celebrate both Islamic and Hindu festivals according to my choice. I wear what I feel is right, and no one else has ownership over my burqa or my actions.” She further criticized Bark’s remarks, stating that his own controversies—including allegations of electricity theft—make his objections irrelevant.
Support from Husband Aman Tyagi
Aman Tyagi defended his wife, emphasizing communal harmony in Sambhal and the law-and-order maintained under CM Yogi Adityanath’s administration. He said, “We should not create unrest over baseless statements. Tamanna’s wearing a burqa during the Kanwar pilgrimage caused no harm and spread a message of brotherhood.” He also highlighted the double standard, noting that a Muslim man using the name “Mohammad” caused no issue, yet a Muslim woman participating in a Hindu ritual sparked controversy.
Tamanna Malik on Religious Freedom
Tamanna concluded, “I respect both my husband’s family and the Sanatan tradition. Those who object to my choices are exceeding their bounds. I follow my conscience, and no one can dictate my personal decisions.”
The incident has ignited debate on religious practices, personal freedom, and gender norms, drawing nationwide attention to Tamanna Malik’s unique act of devotion.
