Bhopal: A terrifying incident unfolded on Tuesday afternoon in Bhopal’s TT Nagar area, as a speeding SUV, driven by an intoxicated driver, wreaked havoc across a stretch of nearly 1.5 kilometers. From Apex Chowk to Rang Mahal Square, the vehicle collided with e-rickshaws, motorcycles, and cars, leaving several people injured.
Rampage on the Roads
The incident occurred around 2 PM near Apex Chowk. The SUV, coming from Link Road No. 1, first rammed into an e-rickshaw before hitting three motorcycles and two cars. Eyewitnesses said the driver was visibly drunk and completely lost control of the vehicle.
Failed Attempts to Stop the Vehicle
The SUV struck its first target near Apex Chowk. When bystanders tried to intervene, the driver accelerated further, heading towards the TT Nagar Police Station while continuing to hit multiple vehicles along the way. The rampage finally ended when the SUV collided with a footpath near Smart City Apartments, just before Rang Mahal Square.
Several Injured
About half a dozen people were injured in the accident, including women and a child. Thankfully, there were no fatalities. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals. Among the victims were a child in the e-rickshaw, two women, and two young men on motorcycles. Neha Shukla, 23, seated in the e-rickshaw, and Sanjay Pawar, 48, near Rang Mahal Square, were among those injured. Another motorcyclist, Satyam, suffered leg injuries after the SUV ran over his foot.
Driver Found Highly Intoxicated
Bystanders chased and detained the driver, handing him over to the police. A breathalyzer test conducted by TT Nagar police revealed an alarming blood alcohol level of 300 mg/dL. For reference, a safe limit is below 10 mg/dL, and levels above 80 mg/dL indicate intoxication. Levels above 400 mg/dL can be fatal.
Case Registered
Medical tests at the hospital confirmed the driver was under the influence of alcohol. TT Nagar police have registered a case under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Motor Vehicles Act. The driver has been identified as 35-year-old Harish Malviya, who was driving a relative’s SUV. Malviya himself works as a driver.
