Pratapgarh/New Delhi: In a significant development in the long-running domestic dispute between Uttar Pradesh MLA Raghuraj Pratap Singh, popularly known as Raja Bhaiya, and his wife Bhanvi Singh, the Supreme Court on Monday directed the Delhi High Court to decide the case within the next four months.
The apex court instructed the High Court to expedite proceedings in the domestic violence case filed by Bhanvi Singh and to deliver a verdict within the stipulated timeframe. The case, which is currently pending before a lower court, relates to serious allegations of physical abuse and illegal possession of weapons made by Bhanvi Singh against her husband.
Stay on Summons Under Review
Earlier, a lower court had issued summons to Raja Bhaiya in connection with the complaint. However, the Delhi High Court had stayed the summons, prompting Bhanvi Singh to approach the Supreme Court. While hearing the matter, the Supreme Court refrained from making any टिप्पणी on the merits of the case but clearly directed the High Court to rule on the issue of the stay on summons within four months.
“The High Court is requested to decide the matter expeditiously, preferably within four months,” the Supreme Court observed.
Allegations and Political Angle
Bhanvi Singh had lodged a complaint with the Delhi Police under the Domestic Violence Act, alleging that Raja Bhaiya had assaulted her and subjected her to both physical and mental cruelty. She also accused him of illegally possessing firearms.
Raja Bhaiya, however, has consistently denied the allegations, calling the entire episode a “political conspiracy” aimed at tarnishing his image.
Shift to MP-MLA Court
According to Bhanvi Singh’s counsel, the case was initially being heard in a family court. However, the High Court later ruled that since the matter involved a sitting MLA, it should be transferred to a special MP-MLA court for trial.
Marital Rift Turned Public
The couple’s marital discord first came into the public spotlight when Bhanvi Singh filed a cheating case against Raja Bhaiya’s close associate and MLC Akshay Pratap Singh. Soon after, Raja Bhaiya moved the Saket Court in Delhi seeking divorce from Bhanvi Singh.
In response, Bhanvi Singh escalated the legal battle by filing cases accusing Raja Bhaiya of domestic violence and physical and mental harassment.
The Supreme Court’s directive is being seen as a crucial step toward resolving a high-profile legal dispute that has drawn widespread political and public attention across Uttar Pradesh and beyond.
