Siwan: The woman police officer who once scripted a historic chapter in Bihar policing by arresting former MP Mohammad Shahabuddin is back in the spotlight. Gauri Kumari, fondly remembered as “Super Cop Gauri,” has now been promoted and is currently serving as a Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO). She took charge as SDPO of Maharajganj subdivision in Siwan district last year.
On November 5, 2005, Gauri Kumari led a five-member special task team of the Bihar Police and arrested the then RJD MP Mohammad Shahabuddin from his official residence in Delhi. The arrest of one of Bihar’s most powerful and controversial political figures was considered nearly impossible at the time—until Gauri Kumari made it happen.
When a Woman Officer Made History
The incident dates back more than two decades, but its impact remains fresh in public memory. At the time, Shahabuddin’s arrest had become a major challenge for the Bihar Police. Several senior and male officers had been assigned the task, but repeated attempts failed. Despite assurances from the then DGP Ashish Ranjan Sinha since August 2005, the police had made no breakthrough.
It was Gauri Kumari, then a sub-inspector, who succeeded where others could not. Her courage, professionalism, and determination turned her into a household name overnight. Newspapers across the country carried her story on their front pages, and her popularity eclipsed even that of many senior police officers.
So significant was the achievement that the then Siwan Superintendent of Police, Rajwinder Singh Bhatti, recommended out-of-turn promotions for Gauri Kumari and the other members of her team.
Inspired by Doordarshan’s Udaan
A week after Shahabuddin’s arrest, Gauri Kumari revealed in an interview that her biggest inspiration came from the iconic Doordarshan serial ‘Udaan’, aired between 1989 and 1991. The show featured actress Kavita Chaudhary as IPS officer Kalyani Singh, a character based on the life of real-life IPS officer Kanchan Chaudhary Bhattacharya, Kavita Chaudhary’s sister.
In Udaan, Kalyani Singh is portrayed as a determined woman from a modest background who carves out her identity in a male-dominated police force through sheer hard work, honesty, and integrity. The character left a deep impression on young Gauri Kumari.
“I Always Wanted to Be Like Kalyani”
Recalling her journey, Gauri Kumari once said, “I always wanted to be like Kalyani. I could not become an IPS officer, but when I became a sub-inspector, I decided to walk the same path of justice and equality.”
When asked how she managed to arrest a sitting MP, she responded with remarkable simplicity: “I was only following the law. My only thought was how to execute the warrant as quickly as possible. The responsibility was so big that there was no space for fear.”
From Inspiration to Icon
Gauri Kumari’s story stands as a powerful example of how inspiration—sometimes drawn from cinema or television—can shape real lives and careers. From being inspired by a fictional IPS officer to becoming a real-life symbol of courage in Bihar Police, her journey reflects determination, integrity, and the transformative power of role models.
Today, as SDPO, Gauri Kumari continues to inspire a new generation of women officers, proving that courage and commitment can break even the strongest barriers.
