Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has decided to enhance the security of the state’s new Deputy Chief Minister, Sunetra Pawar, by granting her Z+ category protection. The Home Department has been issued the necessary instructions to implement this upgraded security arrangement.
Previously, Sunetra Pawar, while serving as a Rajya Sabha MP, was provided X-category security. However, after taking charge as Deputy Chief Minister on 31 January 2026, and being assigned three key ministries along with the guardianship of politically significant districts Pune and Beed, additional security measures were deemed necessary. The office previously used by the late Ajit Pawar has also been allocated to her.
Home Department Instructions:
The government has clarified that Sunetra Pawar will now receive Z+ security. She is expected to formally assume all departmental responsibilities by the end of this week or the beginning of next week.
Understanding Security Categories in India:
In India, VIPs and high-risk individuals are provided security under categories such as X, Y, Z, and Z+, based on threat assessments conducted by security agencies. Z+ security is considered the second-highest protection level in the country after the Special Protection Group (SPG) and is typically granted to VVIPs, Union Ministers, Chief Ministers, Deputy Chief Ministers, and individuals facing serious threats.
Components of Z+ Security:
Z+ protection includes over 30 security personnel, a bulletproof vehicle, two escort vehicles, trained officers, and eight close-protection personnel. Prior to any public event or travel, the location undergoes thorough security checks to ensure maximum safety.
