Stay Alert This Valentine’s Day: Vigilante Warnings in Bhopal and Sagar, Police Heighten Security

Bhopal / Sagar: As Valentine’s Day celebrations unfolded in central India, right-wing organizations in Bhopal and Sagar staged symbolic protests to warn couples against “Western cultural influence.” The International Hindu Parishad (IHP) and Shiv Sena deployed teams to monitor parks, malls, and public spaces. Meanwhile, local police commissioners have issued strict directives to prevent lawlessness and increased patrolling in sensitive areas.

Symbolic “Danda Poojan” and Threats

On Friday, members of right-wing groups conducted a “Danda Poojan” (staff worship) event, which they described as a protest against the perceived moral decline associated with Valentine’s Day. IHP provincial minister Rakesh Prajapati stated that 12 teams would patrol areas including Kaliyasot Dam, Manisha Lake, Manubhawon Hill, and Chinar Park.

In a more alarming development, district head Dharmendra Kumbhakar and Bajrang Dal members threatened to publicly humiliate those violating “social norms,” including forcibly shaving heads in extreme cases.

Cultural Preservation and Surveillance

The Sanskriti Bachao Manch urged hotels and venues not to host Valentine’s Day events, emphasizing that love is a “perennial Indian sentiment,” not a one-day imported celebration. Chandrashekhar Tiwari, head of the Hindu Utsav Committee, announced that 15 teams would monitor malls, parks, and hotels to ensure compliance.

Sagar Incident: Staffs Oiled to Warn Couples

In Sagar, Shiv Sena state chief Pappu Tiwari reportedly oiled sticks in a public warning demonstration. Activists questioned couples attempting to visit temples, restaurants, or parks, deterring public displays of affection.

Police Appeal for Law and Order

Commissioner Sanjay Kumar assured citizens that police patrols would maintain order and prevent harassment. He emphasized that residents should report violations to authorities instead of taking the law into their own hands. Law enforcement officials are committed to upholding order during this annual cultural flashpoint.
