Statue Vandalized, Villagers Attack, Police Injured in Stone-Pelting: Violence Erupts Between Communities in Gariaband

Gariaband, Chhattisgarh: A violent clash broke out between two communities in Gariaband district of Chhattisgarh on Sunday, prompting police to deploy a large contingent to restore order. Three individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident, and strict police surveillance has been imposed throughout the village.

The incident occurred in Dutkaiyan village under the Fingeshwar police station limits. According to authorities, tensions escalated between two groups, resulting in a violent confrontation that left several police personnel injured. To contain the situation, additional police forces were deployed, and the village remains under close monitoring.

Reason Behind the Violence

Police stated that the conflict is linked to an incident from nearly a year ago, when a statue in the village temple was vandalized. Arif and two others were arrested at that time in connection with the case. After being released on bail, these individuals allegedly began threatening villagers and harassing witnesses associated with the temple incident.

On Sunday morning, Arif and his accomplices allegedly attacked six young men with rods, accusing them of filing complaints with the police. This act ignited clashes between the two communities.

Homes Set on Fire

Angered by the attack, groups of villagers surrounded the homes of Arif and his associates and set some houses on fire. Reports indicate that several homes and vehicles were damaged during the chaos. As the situation deteriorated, police personnel attempting to intervene were targeted with stones and bricks, resulting in injuries to at least six officers, some of whom required hospital treatment.

Police Action

Gariaband Superintendent of Police Vedvrat Sirmaur confirmed that Arif, Saleem, and Imran have been re-arrested. Multiple cases have been registered against them. He added that villagers also threw stones at the police, causing injuries. To prevent further escalation, additional police units were dispatched to the village.

Tight Security in the Village

On Monday, the village resembled a security camp, with officers stationed at every corner. Authorities stated that the situation is now under control but warned that vigilance would continue to prevent any recurrence. Residents have been urged to cooperate with law enforcement and avoid spreading rumors, helping maintain peace in the rural area.
