Varanasi: In a shocking case of police corruption, a station in-charge and his subordinate were caught red-handed accepting a bribe in Varanasi on Wednesday evening. The Anti-Corruption Unit apprehended both officers while they demanded money to remove a name from a dowry harassment case. A video of the incident has gone viral, showing the bribe being tossed away at lightning speed.
Case Details
About two years ago, Prahlad Gupta, a resident of Chandauli, was booked under the Dowry Prohibition Act by his wife at Sigra Police Station. The investigation of the case was assigned to Kashi Vidyapith Police Outpost In-Charge Shivakar Mishra. After spending a year in jail, Gupta was released, but Shivakar Mishra allegedly continued pressuring him for money under the pretext of adding more sections to the case.
Gupta approached the Anti-Corruption Department for help. Acting swiftly, the team instructed him to hand over ₹20,000 at the outpost. When Gupta started giving the money to Shivakar Mishra inside the outpost, Mishra immediately handed it to his subordinate, constable Gaurav Dwivedi — and that’s when the Anti-Corruption team swooped in.
Bribe Thrown at Lightning Speed
Caught in the act, constable Dwivedi panicked and pulled the ₹20,000 out of his jacket, tossing it behind a cooler at an astonishing speed. A media person present on site captured the entire moment on video, leaving witnesses stunned.
Following the incident, DCP Kashi Zone suspended both Shivakar Mishra and Gaurav Dwivedi. A case has been registered against the officers, and further investigation is underway.
