A tragic incident highlighting the menace of overspeeding occurred in Noida late Monday night, when a high-speed BMW car rammed into a cyclist, killing him on the spot. The impact was so severe that the victim’s body was flung nearly five metres away, sending shockwaves through the area.
The accident took place near Saraswati School on Nithari Road. The victim, Ashok Sharma (49), a resident of Sector-49, Barola, was returning home on his bicycle after completing his duty at an institute in Sector-10. Around 11 pm, a speeding BMW struck his bicycle with tremendous force.
Locals rushed the critically injured Ashok Sharma to the district hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Following a complaint from the victim’s family, police registered a case and arrested the car driver, Mankul Mahajan, a resident of Sector-44. After post-mortem, the body was handed over to the family. Ashok’s death has left his family facing a severe financial crisis.
BMW Lost Control After Collision
According to police officials, the BMW hit the cyclist near Pillar No. 30 of the elevated road. The collision completely shattered the bicycle into two pieces. After hitting the cyclist, the luxury car went out of control, crashed into an electric pole, and climbed onto the road divider, causing extensive damage to its front portion.
ACP Praveen Kumar said an investigation is underway to determine the exact speed of the vehicle at the time of the accident and whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol. Further legal action will be taken based on the findings.
Luxury Car With VIP Number
The BMW involved in the accident bears a VIP registration number (UP-16 EB 4444). The car was reportedly purchased on December 22, 2023, and its current market value is estimated at around ₹52 lakh. The vehicle was badly damaged in the crash.
Repeated Accidents Involving Luxury Cars
This is not an isolated incident in Noida. The city has witnessed several fatal accidents involving high-end vehicles in recent years. On July 27 this year, a BMW car with a Haryana registration hit a scooter carrying three people near Child PGI in Sector-20, killing a five-year-old girl. Earlier, on March 2, 2019, a speeding BMW broke through barricades and crashed into a tree near Sector-93 red light, killing the driver.
In another incident on May 16, 2024, a BMW rammed into an e-rickshaw near Sumitra Hospital, injuring five people.
Rising Concern Over Road Safety
The latest fatal accident has once again raised serious concerns over reckless driving, overspeeding, and enforcement of traffic laws in Noida. Residents have demanded stricter checks, especially on high-speed luxury vehicles, to prevent such tragedies.
Police have assured that the case will be investigated thoroughly and strict action will be taken against those found guilty.
