Mumbai: Political tensions in Maharashtra are running high ahead of the municipal council elections, with leaders engaging in sharp verbal exchanges. On Thursday, Samajwadi Party (SP) leader and legislator Abu Asim Azmi launched a fierce attack on state minister Nitesh Rane. In a cutting remark, Azmi described Rane as “four feet tall, mentally flawed, and a bad boy.”
Azmi’s criticism came in response to a controversial statement by Rane in September, in which he allegedly declared that he would enter a mosque and target individuals one by one, a remark that sparked widespread condemnation.
Azmi Condemns Hate Politics
Azmi further highlighted the tragic case of a florist in Sawantwadi who committed suicide, claiming communal hatred prevented him from selling flowers and toys freely. Criticizing the government for inaction, Azmi accused Rane of contributing to a climate of hatred in the country. He emphasized that issues like cow and bull-related incidents are being used to incite violence. Azmi stated that while he considers himself loyal to the nation, he opposes the government’s divisive politics and believes it is his responsibility to promote love and unity.
Questions Raised on Judiciary
The SP leader also questioned the role of the judiciary in high-profile cases such as the Mumbai blasts and Malegaon blasts. He insisted that religious practices, including prayers, should never be treated as a crime. Azmi demanded that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis order prayer rooms for Muslim students in educational institutions and take strict action against the politics of hate.
Political Rivalry Continues
The verbal sparring between Azmi and Rane is not new. Rane has previously attacked Azmi, who often responds with sharp retorts. The SP, under Azmi’s leadership, is contesting elections in the Konkan region, a stronghold of Narayan Rane’s influence. Azmi recently accused the current government of promoting “party-breaking politics” and giving free rein to ministers who indulge in hate speech, indirectly referencing Nilesh Rane.
