Jodhpur, Rajasthan: Under the orders of the Supreme Court, Ladakh-based climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was brought from Jodhpur Central Jail to AIIMS Jodhpur on Saturday morning for a comprehensive medical examination. He was transported under tight security following complaints of a severe stomach infection, reportedly caused by consumption of contaminated water in the jail.
The medical report from AIIMS is scheduled to be submitted to the Supreme Court by 2 February. Subsequent legal and medical decisions will be made based on the findings.
High-Security Transport to AIIMS
Sonam Wangchuk was escorted from the jail to AIIMS under a special security cover, with the entire route and hospital premises placed on high alert under the supervision of Police Commissioner Om Prakash. Additional police personnel were deployed to manage any eventuality.
Thorough Examination by Senior Doctors
At AIIMS Jodhpur, Wangchuk was examined by a team of senior specialist doctors, including a gastroenterologist, who conducted detailed tests to assess his abdominal condition. This examination was specifically directed by the Supreme Court to ascertain the extent of his stomach infection.
Supreme Court Oversight and Previous Medical Checks
This marks the 21st medical checkup for Sonam Wangchuk since his detention, with his health being continuously monitored. He has been held in Jodhpur Central Jail under the National Security Act (NSA) since September 2025. Reports on his health have been periodically submitted to the court, ensuring ongoing oversight by both jail authorities and medical officials.
