In a heart-wrenching incident that has shocked society and exposed the dark side of collapsing family values, a 67-year-old woman in Kanpur was allegedly brutally assaulted by her own son and daughter-in-law, leaving her with four broken teeth and three fractured ribs.
The victim, Meera Trivedi, a resident of Bahlol Mandhna village under Bithoor police station limits, was admitted in critical condition to the ICU of Hallet Hospital, where timely medical treatment saved her life.
According to the elderly woman, the very son whom she carried for nine months and raised with care has now become the source of unbearable cruelty in her old age. She alleged that her son Navneet and his wife repeatedly assaulted her and forced her out of her own home.
Meera Trivedi stated that she had approached the local police station several times to complain about the violence, but no action was taken. Instead, she claims the police allegedly sided with the accused and even ordered her room to be locked, leaving her and her husband Shivprakash effectively homeless within their own house.
Due to the locked room, the elderly couple has been forced to live on the upper floor of the house. Climbing stairs has become extremely painful for them in their fragile condition. The couple reportedly lacks basic necessities such as proper clothing, bedding, and a safe place to sleep.
After failing to receive justice at the local level, the victim approached Police Commissioner Raghubir Lal, following which the Bithoor police finally registered an FIR against the son and daughter-in-law and initiated an investigation.
Confirming the development, Bithoor Inspector Prem Narayan Vishwakarma stated that the case has been registered on the orders of the Police Commissioner and a detailed probe is underway.
Earlier, distressed by continuous harassment, Meera Trivedi had also filed a case under the Uttar Pradesh Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 in the court of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Sadar. On January 17, the court directed the son to pay ₹3,000 per month as maintenance to his parents by the 7th of every month.
Now, the elderly woman has once again appealed to the Police Commissioner, demanding that her locked room be reopened and that she be provided a safe and dignified life in her own home.
This tragic incident has sparked serious concern over the safety of senior citizens and raised troubling questions about the effectiveness of ground-level enforcement of laws meant to protect the elderly.
