Thane (Maharashtra): A major accident was reported in Maharashtra’s Thane city early Tuesday morning after a concrete slab from the fifth floor of a residential building collapsed onto the flat below, leaving three people injured, one of them critically.
The incident occurred at around 3:07 AM at the five-storey Nutan Neelam Apartment, located near Hanuman Temple in Shantinagar, Wagle Estate. The building is reportedly 35 years old.
Slab From Flat No. 501 Collapsed
According to officials, the slab from Room/Flat No. 501 on the fifth floor suddenly broke and crashed onto the fourth-floor flat, causing injuries to residents in both the upper and lower flats.
The injured were identified as:
- Gajendra Prasad (60) – suffered a fracture in his right shoulder
- Prince Yadav (25) – sustained a fracture in his right leg
- Pradeep Yadav (23) – suffered injuries to both legs and other parts of the body
All three were immediately shifted to a government hospital in Thane. Later, the critically injured person was transferred to a hospital in Mumbai for advanced treatment.
Emergency Teams Rush to Spot
Following the collapse, emergency response teams rushed to the site. Yaseen Tadvi, head of the Thane Municipal Corporation’s disaster management cell, confirmed that prompt action helped prevent a bigger tragedy.
80–85 Residents Safely Evacuated
Officials said the building houses around 80 to 85 residents. All were evacuated safely after the incident. Around half of the residents were moved to a temporary shelter at a TMC school in Shantinagar, while others arranged accommodation on their own.
Building Already Categorised as ‘C2B’
Authorities revealed that the building had earlier been classified under the C2B category, meaning it required major structural repairs though it was not officially declared unsafe for immediate occupancy.
However, after the slab collapse, the remaining structure was found to be in a dangerous condition.
Building Sealed, Electricity Cut Off
As a precautionary measure, the municipal corporation sealed the entire building. Electricity supply was disconnected, and police personnel were deployed to secure the area and prevent residents from re-entering the premises.
The apartment consists of A and B wings with 26 flats, and further action will be taken by the municipal building department after a detailed structural inspection.
