Meerut, Uttar Pradesh: A wedding in Meerut has become the center of a social media and communal controversy. Muslim doctor Shavez Rana was set to marry a Hindu woman at the Paradise Mandap on Mavana Road this Friday. The bride, a bank manager from Rajasthan, has been determined to go ahead with the wedding despite opposition from certain Hindu groups, who have announced a mahapanchayat against the marriage.
In response, Sachin Sirohi, national president of the Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Suraksha Sangathan, urged people via Facebook Live to attend the mahapanchayat in large numbers. Reacting to the post, Shavez Rana commented, “Sirohi, please leave me alone. Let me get married.”
The wedding invitation had gone viral on social media, intensifying tensions. With the bride’s father and brother absent, her uncle lodged an FIR opposing the marriage. The police have registered a case against Shavez Rana under the “love jihad” provision.
The bride stated that she and Shavez have been in a relationship for six years. She claimed that her uncle’s opposition is motivated by a property dispute and is aimed at harassing her. She further clarified that she follows Buddhism and that allegations of love jihad are unfounded.
As security arrangements have been increased around the venue, the situation remains tense, with authorities monitoring developments closely.
