Indore, Jan 29, 2026: Former Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan emphasized the need to make the proposed elevated corridor on old AB Road completely “signal-free” during a key meeting with Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, local representatives, senior officials, and technical experts on Thursday.
Addressing the officials, Mahajan, popularly known as “Tai,” stressed that the corridor should allow commuters to travel without stopping at signals or intersections, or else the project’s purpose would be defeated. She highlighted that Indore’s traffic is growing rapidly, and any elevated infrastructure must be planned with both current and future needs in mind.
“An elevated road is only meaningful if a commuter can travel its entire length without interruption,” Mahajan said. She cited examples from busy intersections such as Palasia, suggesting traffic designs that allow vehicles to take U-turns smoothly and merge onto MG Road without waiting at red lights.
The former Speaker also proposed forming a small expert committee to review the ongoing project and suggest improvements based on survey data and projected traffic needs. She underlined that while tenders have been awarded and construction has begun, careful planning is crucial to ensure the corridor benefits generations to come.
Mahajan recalled Indore’s earlier infrastructure projects, including the ring road and bypass, noting that rapid urban growth often rendered them insufficient. Drawing from this experience, she urged that the elevated corridor should be executed with maximum convenience and long-term foresight, ensuring a lasting solution to the city’s traffic woes.
