Shri Krishna Janmasthan–Shahi Eidgah Dispute: Key Hearing in High Court Today

Mathura, Uttar Pradesh: The heat surrounding the Shri Krishna Janmasthan and Shahi Eidgah mosque dispute has intensified once again. Nearly five years after the case first reached the courts, a crucial hearing is scheduled today, 30 January 2026, at the Allahabad High Court. The nation is closely watching, as the hearing is expected to determine the key points of contention in the decades-old legal battle.

Challenge to the 1968 Agreement:
The legal fight, initiated by Mahendra Pratap Singh, President of Shri Krishna Janmbhoomi Mukti Nyas, in 2020, focuses heavily on a 1968 agreement between the Shri Krishna Janmbhoomi Seva Sansthan and the mosque committee. The petitioners claim the agreement is illegal, arguing that the land on which the mosque stands is officially recorded in the name of Shri Krishna Janmbhoomi Seva Trust. They contend that the Sansthan had no legal authority to enter into any such agreement.

Allegations of Illegal Occupation:
The Hindu side asserts that of the 13.37 acres of sacred land, approximately 2.5 acres were historically occupied by a temple destroyed during the Mughal era (1670) to construct the Shahi Eidgah. They argue that the site of the mosque is the original birthplace of Lord Krishna, with no mention of a mosque in the revenue records. Citing Alexander Cunningham’s archaeological reports, they claim that Hindu symbols can be observed on the mosque pillars.

Focus on Court-Ordered Survey:
The case gained further attention when the High Court ordered a survey of the premises, which was temporarily stayed by the Supreme Court following a petition from the mosque committee. Meanwhile, the hearing on the merits of the case continues. The Hindu side has emphasized that this dispute is not merely about land but represents a fight for their heritage and ancestors.

Today’s proceedings are expected to clarify the key points of contention, potentially shaping the future of this historic and highly sensitive dispute.
