Shivpal Yadav Slams BJP Over Swami Avimukteshwaranand Controversy, Questions Their Claim to Sanatan Values

Lucknow, January 24:
Senior Samajwadi Party leader Shivpal Singh Yadav has entered the ongoing controversy surrounding Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati, taking a strong stance against the BJP. The dispute, which erupted during the Makar Mela in Prayagraj, has escalated after a confrontation between the Shankaracharya and his followers during the Mauni Amavasya bathing festival.

Shivpal’s Statement

Addressing the media, Shivpal Yadav criticized the BJP for allegedly misleading people in the name of Sanatan Dharma. He questioned how party leaders could claim to uphold Hindu traditions while allegedly disrespecting revered figures like Swami Avimukteshwaranand.

“The BJP speaks in the name of Sanatan Dharma, but this is misleading. In Prayagraj, the real mela and bathing rites began under the guidance of saints. If individuals like Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati are insulted or prevented from participating in the sacred bath, how can these people claim to be true Sanatanis? What kind of religious values are they upholding?”

Shivpal also demanded that the administration issue an apology to the Shankaracharya for the perceived disrespect, highlighting the seriousness of the issue.

Political and Religious Implications

The controversy has ignited debates over the BJP’s positioning on Hindu traditions and is seen by some as part of the preparations for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh elections. Analysts suggest that the Samajwadi Party is attempting to navigate a soft Hindutva strategy in light of the ongoing dispute.

Meanwhile, the Shankaracharya continues his protest. He did not participate in the Sangam bathing ceremony during Basant Panchami, citing ongoing observances of Mauni Amavasya and demanding an official apology from the administration. The standoff shows no signs of abating, keeping the religious and political discourse in Uttar Pradesh tense.
