Shamli: Illegal Extortion on Yamuna Bridge, Misuse of ‘Panchayat’ Name by Local Goons

Shamli (UP): A disturbing case of illegal extortion has come to light on the Yamuna Bridge near the Haryana border in Shamli district, Uttar Pradesh. Videos circulating on social media show a group of goon-like youths forcibly stopping vehicles, claiming to represent a local panchayat, and extorting money from motorists. Following the viral videos, the administration has ordered a thorough investigation.

Extortion in the Name of Panchayat
According to reports, some aggressive young men had set up makeshift shacks beside the road near the bridge. They allegedly brandished sticks to intimidate drivers, stopping vehicles at will. Once the vehicles were halted, the men demanded large sums of money, falsely claiming affiliation with the municipal or district panchayat. Vehicles were only allowed to proceed after payments were made.

The video, reportedly recorded by a truck driver who was being extorted, clearly shows the men threatening the driver with abusive language and even threats to life when he refused to pay. The clip quickly went viral on social media on Thursday, prompting swift administrative action.

Long-Standing Problem, Community Concerns
Local residents claim that this illegal extortion has been going on for a long time, but fear of the goons prevented anyone from speaking out. The perpetrators deliberately misused the panchayat’s name to create confusion, though there is no official link between the extortion and any governmental or panchayat body.

Administration Responds
Upon receiving information about the incident, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Nidhi Bhardwaj took immediate cognizance. She confirmed that a fair and thorough investigation is underway, and strict legal action will be taken against the culprits. The administration clarified that no collection of fees is authorized at the Yamuna Bridge.

The incident has raised public concern, with local residents questioning the authorities: why did such illegal extortion persist for so long, and under whose protection were these activities allowed to continue?
