Shajapur Hit by Hailstorm: Pear- and Lemon-Sized Hailstones Damage Crops, Disrupt Daily Life

Shajapur, Madhya Pradesh: A sudden and severe hailstorm swept across Shajapur district on Tuesday, blanketing the region in a thick layer of ice and creating scenes reminiscent of Kashmir. The storm, accompanied by strong winds and heavy rain, caused major disruption on highways, forcing vehicles to halt and people to seek shelter.

Hailstones as large as pears and lemons were reported in several areas including Mohan Bardodia, Bolai, Chauma, Barnavad, Nipania, Manglia, and Sagadia. The intense storm and subsequent heavy rainfall turned roads into icy sheets, making vehicular movement nearly impossible. Banners and posters along roads were uprooted due to gusty winds.

Farmers reported significant damage to crops. Standing wheat crops were flattened, raising concerns over reduced yields. Local farmers, including Awadhesh and Narendra, said that the unseasonal hailstorm has caused severe losses, and they fear a sharp drop in agricultural production this season.

Meteorological expert Satyendra Dhanotia warned that the harsh weather conditions are likely to continue on Wednesday. Authorities and the meteorological department have advised farmers to remain vigilant and take precautions. On Monday, the district recorded a maximum temperature of 27.2°C and a minimum of 16.5°C, with winds blowing at approximately 15 km/h, adding to the chill caused by the humid weather.

The unexpected hailstorm has heightened concerns among residents and farmers alike, emphasizing the vulnerability of crops and daily life to extreme weather events in the region.
