Shahdol, MP: The northern and northwestern winds sweeping across India have caused a sharp drop in temperatures in several districts of Madhya Pradesh. Shahdol district has now emerged as the coldest city in the plains for the past four days, with the minimum temperature recorded at 6.7°C on Thursday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Bhopal.
Sudden Cold Wave Hits Shahdol
The chilling winds from northwestern India have led to a significant temperature fall across the state. Shahdol, in particular, has experienced the most severe cold. Dense fog blankets the area in the evenings, reducing visibility and slowing down daily activities. People are mostly staying indoors until sunrise, while bonfires have been lit at several street corners and alleys for warmth. Tea stalls have seen increased crowds as residents seek temporary relief from the cold.
The harsh winds have also posed difficulties for the homeless and those living on pavements. Despite the municipal corporation arranging night shelters, many residents are forced to endure the freezing conditions outdoors.
Cold Expected to Intensify
Meteorologists warn that the cold wave could worsen over the next two to three days due to the continued northwestern wind flow. Snowfall in the nearby hills is contributing to the chill in the plains. Farmers working in fields, rickshaw pullers, and laborers are particularly affected by the dropping temperatures.
Shahdol’s Kalyanpur: Coldest Place in the Plains
Following the snowmelt in the hills, icy winds have reached the plains, making Kalyanpur in Shahdol the coldest location in India’s plains region. The 6.7°C minimum temperature recorded on Thursday has set a record for November, with local elders remarking that such cold in November has not been seen for decades.
Health Advisory
Dr. Rajesh Mishra, Chief Medical Officer of Shahdol, has advised residents to wear warm clothing when stepping outdoors and avoid leaving home unless necessary. Special care should be taken for elderly people and children, and nutritious food should be consumed to maintain health. Anyone experiencing cold-related illnesses should immediately visit the nearest health center.
