Security Forces Launch Search Operation in Kathua After Suspicious Sightings; Operation Trashi-I Enters 13th Day

Jammu, January 30, 2026: Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district have launched a comprehensive search operation following intelligence reports of suspicious activity. Local residents in Khumla village reported seeing two individuals carrying bags on their backs, prompting immediate action by the army under senior officers’ supervision.

Operation Expands Across Jammu & Kashmir
The search operation in Billwar, Kathua, is part of a broader counter-terrorism drive spanning upper regions of Kishtwar, including Doda and Udhampur, as security forces intensify efforts to track militants. Despite heavy snowfall, the operation has continued without interruption, with the army, paramilitary forces, police, and Special Operations Group (SOG) jointly scouring hilly and forested terrains. The forces are pursuing militants affiliated with Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM).

Operation Trashi-I Continues
The ongoing Operation Trashi-I in Kishtwar entered its 13th day on Thursday, prompting high alert in neighboring Himachal Pradesh districts, particularly Chamba. Chamba SP Vijay Saklani confirmed that security agencies are strengthening interstate border surveillance to prevent infiltration. The district shares a 208-kilometer border with Jammu and Kashmir, making it one of Himachal’s most sensitive frontier areas.

Recent Clashes and Counter-Terrorism Successes
On January 18, a firefight took place near Sonar village in Mandral-Singhpora during the initial phase of Operation Trashi-I, leaving eight security personnel injured, one of whom later succumbed to injuries. Further encounters occurred on January 22 and 24, the latter resulting in the elimination of a Pakistani JeM terrorist.

Militants’ Earlier Escape and Ongoing Threat
Security forces had previously neutralized three militant hideouts in Kathua on January 16, seizing rations, utensils, gas cylinders, empty M4 cartridges, and other logistics intended for long-term operations. However, the militants managed to escape, later evading forces in subsequent encounters in Kamad Nala, Kalaban, and Dhanu Parol areas. Officials indicate that these incidents reflect a long-term infiltration strategy, keeping neighboring districts like Chamba on constant alert due to the persistent threat.
