Scooter Plunges into Gorge in Mussoorie Due to Slippery Road; Two Injured

Mussoorie: Slippery road conditions in Mussoorie, Uttarakhand, have once again led to accidents, this time on the George Everest–Hathi Paon Road. A scooter lost control on the icy surface and fell into a deep gorge, injuring two people.

According to reports, extreme cold caused frost to form on the road, making it dangerously slippery. Eyewitnesses said that as the scooter reached the frosty patch, the rider lost balance and could not control the vehicle. The absence of a parapet along the road edge caused the scooter to plunge into the gorge. Fortunately, local residents rushed to the scene, rescued the victims, and took them to a nearby hospital where they received treatment.

Public Anger Over Lack of Safety Measures
The incident has sparked anger among local residents, who pointed out that several stretches of George Everest–Hathi Paon Road still lack parapets. They say the combination of icy roads and unprotected edges makes daily travel hazardous, particularly for two-wheeler riders. Residents claim that despite repeated complaints to elected representatives, the administration, and the Public Works Department (PWD), no substantial safety measures have been implemented.

Police Confirmation and Ongoing Measures
Mussoorie police confirmed the accident, stating that the scooter lost control and fell into the gorge. The two riders sustained minor injuries and received first aid at a hospital. The vehicle has been recovered, and the case is under investigation.

The administration has assured that the issue of missing parapets is being addressed. Correspondence with the relevant departments is underway, and measures such as installing parapets and preventing slipperiness during cold weather will be implemented soon. Locals have urged authorities to take immediate action to protect both residents and tourists and prevent similar accidents in the future.
