Prayagraj: The Allahabad High Court has granted significant relief to 22 police officers, including former CO Anuj Chaudhary, in connection with the Sambhal violence case. The court has temporarily stayed the order of the CJM court directing the registration of an FIR against these officers.
The relief comes after Anuj Chaudhary and the Uttar Pradesh government challenged the CJM court’s directive in the High Court. A bench led by Justice Samit Gopal issued the order on the petitions filed by former CO Anuj Chaudhary and former Station House Officer Anuj Tomar. The next hearing in the matter has been scheduled after two weeks, and the stay on the FIR will remain in effect until then.
Background of the Case
The case dates back to November 24, 2024, during the Sambhal violence, when police fired shots at a crowd during the Jama Masjid survey. According to Yameen, the father of the injured youth Alam, his son was bringing a cart at the scene when he was shot by the police. Acting on Yameen’s petition, the CJM court had ordered the registration of an FIR against 22 police officers, including then CO Anuj Chaudhary.
High Court Orders Response Within 14 Days
In their petition, Anuj Chaudhary and former SHO Anuj Tomar challenged the CJM court order in the High Court. The state government, represented by Additional Advocate General Manish Goyal, submitted multiple arguments. The High Court has now stayed the CJM court order and directed the complainant to submit a response within 14 days.
