Saluting Maharaja Bijli Pasi: The 12th-Century Warrior and Symbol of Dalit Pride

LUCKNOW: Across India, today marks the remembrance of Maharaja Bijli Pasi, a legendary 12th-century warrior and a symbol of Dalit pride. Renowned for his courage, leadership, and unwavering self-respect, Maharaja Bijli Pasi ruled over large parts of the Awadh region, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations. He is celebrated not only as a valiant king but also as a champion of the Pasai community and the broader Dalit society.

Independent Rule in Awadh
Historical accounts suggest that Maharaja Bijli Pasi reigned over Bijnorgarh in the latter half of the 12th century, approximately from 1148 to 1184. At a time when the region held significant political and military importance, he asserted his independence and expanded his kingdom without submitting to any major contemporary ruler.

Founding of Bijnorgarh and Nathvagadh
Maharaja Bijli Pasi was born to Nathavan Dev and his mother, Bizna. To honor his mother, he established Biznagadh, later known as Bijnorgarh. He also founded Nathvagadh in memory of his father, situated three kilometers north of Bijnorgarh. Today, the region is known as Bijnor.

Builder of Twelve Forts
Maharaja Bijli Pasi constructed twelve forts, underscoring the military strength and strategic vision of his reign. These forts not only ensured security but also symbolized the reach and influence of his kingdom.

Victory over Raja Jaichand
Maharaja Bijli Pasi is especially remembered for his bravery in battles against the powerful King Jaichand of Kannauj. He defeated Jaichand’s forces twice, maintaining the independence and dignity of his kingdom. Some historians believe he attained martyrdom in the Battle of Ganjur in 1194, though historical accounts vary.

A Symbol of Dalit Pride
Beyond his role as a ruler and warrior, Maharaja Bijli Pasi represents the historical pride of Dalit kings. His life and achievements send a powerful message to the Dalit community about their heritage of leadership, courage, and sovereignty. Political and social leaders, including Kanshi Ram, have further reinforced his heroic image, linking him with qualities revered in Sikh Gurus, earning him lasting respect and devotion.

Recognition by the Government
In 2000, the Government of India honored Maharaja Bijli Pasi by issuing a commemorative postage stamp. Additionally, Nihlgarh railway station was renamed Maharaja Bijli Pasi Railway Station on 27 August 2024 by the Uttar Pradesh government.

Annual Celebration
Every year on 25 December, Maharaja Bijli Pasi’s birth anniversary is celebrated with fervor. Members of the Pasai community and admirers from across the country gather at his forts and historic sites to pay tribute to his valor, governance, and social contributions. Former Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav also paid heartfelt homage to the legendary king on this day.
