Rs 10,000 Whisky Bottles with Rs 56 Liquor? Rajasthan Cracks Down with QR Codes

Jaipur: Cases of counterfeit and adulterated liquor have been repeatedly reported in Rajasthan, even in five-star hotels. Recently, a shocking incident emerged at the Jaipur Marriott, where expensive branded bottles were found to contain cheap local spirits. To curb such malpractice, the Excise Department has introduced a major initiative: all liquor bottles will now carry a hologram sticker with a QR code, enabling consumers to verify the authenticity of their purchase.

QR Code to Ensure Authenticity
Under the new system, all liquor bottles must feature a hologram sticker with a QR code. Once scanned using the Citizen App, the code will display comprehensive details of the liquor, including the brand, MRP, packaging size, batch number, production date, and manufacturer’s name. Only bottles with these holograms are being sold at licensed outlets, ensuring transparency and authenticity.

The Rs 10,000 Bottle Scandal
Consumers often assume that high-end hotels serve only genuine liquor. However, in November 2025, an investigation at the Jaipur Marriott revealed a startling truth. During a raid, the Excise Department found bottles of premium English whisky filled with local spirits such as Dholamaru and Ghumar, costing just Rs 56. Fake hologram stickers had been applied to these bottles to mislead customers. Following the incident, the department took strict action against those responsible.

Cracking Down on Fake Liquor
This QR code initiative is expected to be a game-changer in the fight against counterfeit liquor, helping consumers verify purchases instantly and holding suppliers accountable. With these measures, Rajasthan aims to restore trust in both retail outlets and hospitality venues.
