Yavatmal (Maharashtra): A major controversy has erupted in Maharashtra’s Yavatmal district after a video surfaced showing school students allegedly dancing with swords to a Pakistani patriotic military song during a cultural programme at a government Urdu school. The incident has triggered sharp political reactions, prompting the education department to order an inquiry.
The programme was reportedly held on January 31 at a school under the Umarkhed Municipal Council limits. In the viral video, students can be seen performing a choreographed dance while holding swords, with a song playing in the background that opposition leaders claim is linked to Pakistan’s military and its 1965 war propaganda.
BJP Councillor Files Complaint
BJP councillor Gopal Kalane lodged a complaint with the police, alleging that the event was conducted in the presence of the ruling panel’s mayor, chairman, and other municipal representatives.
Kalane questioned whether the government Urdu school was “turning children into young mujahideen” and accused the organisers of promoting anti-national sentiment.
‘Song Calls for Attacking Enemies of Islam,’ Claims BJP
The BJP leader claimed that the song performed by students was a Pakistani army war anthem from the 1965 Indo-Pak war, and its lyrics allegedly contain a call to attack the “enemies of Islam.”
He alleged that children were made to dance while swinging naked swords, calling it “pure propaganda being carried out using taxpayers’ money.”
Kalane demanded that strict action be taken and sought registration of a case under relevant sections of the law, including Section 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), citing threats to India’s unity, integrity, and sovereignty.
BJP Warns of Protest
BJP general secretary Mahesh Kaleshwarakar also condemned the incident, stating that the song is widely recognised as a Pakistani patriotic anthem still used in Pakistan’s military and national events.
He warned that such performances in a government school could plant anti-national ideas in young minds and said protests would continue until the police register an FIR.
Police Begin Investigation
Police confirmed that a complaint has been received and an investigation is underway. Station Officer Shankar Panchal said the matter is being examined and action will be taken based on findings.
Education Department Denies Allegations
However, education officials rejected the allegations. Education officer Rasool Patel stated that the song performed was not meant to glorify any religion or country but was based on the 1857 freedom struggle, aimed at encouraging patriotism and inspiring students to contribute towards the nation.
Patel said there was no intention to promote any religious ideology or threaten national integrity.
The controversy has now intensified, with political groups demanding strict accountability while authorities continue to verify the authenticity and context of the performance.
