RGHS Scam: Millions Misappropriated Under ‘Free Treatment’ Scheme, Double Claims and Fraudulent Practices Exposed

Jaipur, Rajasthan: A massive scam has been uncovered in the Rajasthan Government Health Scheme (RGHS), which provides free medical treatment to government employees, officers, pensioners, and their dependents. Several private hospitals and pharmacy stores exploited the scheme, submitting inflated and fraudulent claims for treatments. Following verification and investigation, the state government has taken strict action against those involved.

Double Claims and Unnecessary Treatments:
Under the RGHS, private hospitals upload patient treatment documents to the health department portal, after which the government reimburses the medical expenses. An investigation revealed that some hospitals had claimed reimbursement for the same surgery twice. Additionally, unnecessary tests were conducted, and low-cost tests were billed at higher rates, resulting in significant financial fraud.

Action Taken:
The Medical Health Department, led by Principal Secretary Gayatri Rathore, confirmed that 34 private hospitals involved in the scam have been removed from the RGHS panel. Furthermore, 28 government employees complicit in the scheme have been suspended. So far, penalties amounting to approximately ₹36 crore have been recovered from the fraudulent hospitals.

Pharmacy Stores Also Involved:
The RGHS scheme also provides free medicines to eligible beneficiaries through registered pharmacies. Investigations revealed that several pharmacy stores sold medicines unnecessarily and submitted fake claims for reimbursement. In the past three months, 431 pharmacy stores have been suspended from the scheme, and a total penalty of ₹4.64 crore has been recovered from the guilty parties.

Government’s Stance:
The state government has emphasized zero tolerance for such malpractices and assured strict monitoring to prevent further misuse of the RGHS, safeguarding public funds and ensuring that the scheme benefits the intended recipients.
