Saurabh Rai, Mau: Controversy has erupted over the resignation of Prashant Singh, Deputy Commissioner of GST in Uttar Pradesh. While Singh had initially cited allegations against CM Yogi Adityanath as the reason for stepping down, a new statement from his brother has added a fresh dimension to the matter, claiming that fear of recovery prompted the resignation.
Prashant Singh, 48, a resident of Sarwan village in Sarayalkhansi police station area of Mau district, is posted as Deputy Commissioner in the GST department in Ayodhya. His resignation on Tuesday afternoon sent shockwaves across the department. Singh had stated that continuous remarks by Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand about the state’s chief minister had hurt him deeply, prompting him to resign. During his resignation, Singh reportedly broke down in front of his wife, saying he could no longer tolerate what he perceived as the humiliation of the Chief Minister.
However, his brother, Dr. Vishwajeet Singh, claims that the real reason behind the resignation was fear of recovery.
Allegations on Social Media
Amidst Singh’s resignation, two letters began circulating on social media, alleging that he had secured his job through a fraudulent disability certificate. This triggered a series of accusations and counter-accusations. The central question remains: Did the Deputy Commissioner actually obtain his position using a fake disability certificate, and did he resign to evade consequences? These allegations were brought forward by none other than Singh’s own brother, Dr. Vishwajeet Singh.
Early Life and Political Background
Born on 28 October 1978 in Sarwan village, Mau district, Prashant Singh completed his matriculation in Mau, intermediate in Tanda, and graduated in Arts from Varanasi and LLB from Azamgarh. According to his cousin Monu Singh, Prashant was an academically bright student with a keen interest in politics. During his LLB studies, he entered student politics and became close to former Samajwadi Party stalwart Amar Singh.
Between 2010 and 2013, Prashant also tutored children while continuing his political activities. During a split in the Samajwadi Party in 2011, he joined Amar Singh’s newly formed National Lok Manch as the district president for Mau, contributing to strengthening the organization locally.
Civil Service Career
Prashant Singh joined the civil services in 2011. After training, he received his first posting in Saharanpur in 2013. Despite his administrative responsibilities, he maintained a continued interest in politics, even contesting internal elections within the Uttar Pradesh GST organization.
Brother’s Allegations
In 2021, Singh’s elder brother filed a complaint with the then Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Mau, alleging that the disability certificate used by Prashant to secure his job was entirely fraudulent. According to him, the medical condition mentioned in the certificate is impossible for anyone under 50 years of age. He demanded a medical examination of his brother.
The CMO wrote to the Medical Board in Azamgarh on 28 September 2021, requesting testing, but Prashant Singh did not appear. A follow-up summons on 7 October 2021 was also ignored. Further notices in November 2022 and August 2024 met the same response, with no action taken against him.
In October 2025, frustrated by the inaction, Vishwajeet Singh escalated the matter to the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities. The CMO was instructed to investigate and submit a report. In December 2025, the CMO informed the Health Directorate of Uttar Pradesh that a court order had been issued, seeking further directions.
Dr. Sanjay Gupta, in-charge CMO of Mau, confirmed to Navbharat Times that an investigation is ongoing. He stated that so far, Prashant Singh has not cooperated with the process. “Until he appears for examination, it is not possible to comment conclusively. Only after his presence will the matter be clear,” he added.
