Mau/Varanasi, UP: Uttar Pradesh’s Mau district, already known for producing talented athletes in basketball, wrestling, and weightlifting, has now made its mark in cricket. 24-year-old Ravi Singh, son of a vigilance sub-inspector, has risen from local school grounds to secure his place in the IPL 2026, with Rajasthan Royals winning him in the auction for ₹95 lakh. Earlier, Royal Challengers Bangalore had bid ₹90 lakh for the left-handed batsman and wicketkeeper.
A Family of Support and Dedication
Ravi’s father, Prithviraj Singh, serves as a Sub-Inspector in Varanasi’s vigilance department, while his mother is a homemaker. Growing up in Mau and Varanasi, Ravi devoted all his time to cricket. He is the middle child among three brothers, with the elder working in the PSC and the younger still studying. His father recalls that Ravi spent every possible hour on the field, a dedication that has now borne fruit.
Early Cricketing Journey and National Recognition
Ravi Singh first gained attention while representing UP in the Vijay Merchant Trophy (2015-16) at the Under-16 level. He continued to impress in the Under-17 category and at the 61st and 62nd National School Games, establishing himself as one of UP’s promising young cricketers.
Mentorship with Coach Saurabh Dubey
In 2020, Ravi joined REPL Academy in Lucknow, where coach Saurabh Dubey guided him. Since then, Ravi has delivered impressive performances in domestic cricket, scoring 295 runs in ten T20 matches at a strike rate of 175, including two half-centuries. His recent unbeaten 68 against Vidarbha in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy further cemented his reputation at the national level.
Acknowledging Family and Coach
In a special conversation with NBT Online, Ravi credited his parents and coach Saurabh Dubey for his success. “My parents always supported and guided me through challenges. Whatever I am today, it’s because of them,” he said. His selection in the IPL has sparked celebrations in Mau and Varanasi, marking a proud moment for his hometown.
