Kolkata, West Bengal: A rare and highly venomous snake, the banded krait (Bungarus fasciatus), was recently spotted in the wild forests of Bengal. The encounter, captured on video by Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer Praveen Kaswan during his night patrol, has gone viral on social media, captivating nature enthusiasts across the country.
A Rare Sight in the Dark
The video shows the snake gracefully swimming in water under torchlight, its striking black and yellow bands clearly visible. Officer Kaswan shared the footage on his X handle, highlighting the extraordinary beauty and rarity of the banded krait.
About the Banded Krait
The banded krait is one of India’s most unique and dangerous snakes, easily recognizable by its wide black and yellow bands and triangular body shape. It is primarily nocturnal and shy, preferring to avoid humans. During the day, it usually hides under leaf litter, in burrows, or near water sources.
Venomous but Reclusive
This species possesses potent neurotoxic venom, which can severely affect the nervous system if untreated. Despite its deadly venom, the banded krait is not aggressive and rarely bites unless provoked or mishandled. It primarily preys on other snakes, reptiles, and small mammals, playing a critical role in maintaining ecological balance.
Significance in the Ecosystem
The presence of the banded krait indicates a healthy habitat. By controlling populations of other reptiles and small animals, it helps maintain a stable and balanced ecosystem.
Public Reaction
The viral video has drawn widespread admiration. Many viewers praised the snake’s striking pattern, while others shared personal encounters with similar species. Officer Kaswan commented, “Nature has gifted these snakes with such distinctive and beautiful patterns!” His post reflects both awe and respect for this often-misunderstood reptile.
The rare sighting highlights the importance of conservation awareness and respectful coexistence with wildlife, particularly species that are vital to the health of local ecosystems.
