Rare Asian Wild Cat Spotted in Aravalli’s Mangar Bani

A rare wildlife sighting has once again brought attention to the ecological significance of the Aravalli hills. In the Mangar Bani area, researchers have recorded the presence of an Asian Wild Cat (Desert Cat) for the first time.

A Protected Haven for Wildlife
Mangar Bani, situated in the heart of the Aravallis, is proving to be a safe haven for wildlife conservation. The discovery of this elusive and mysterious species was made as part of the Small Cat Action Fund 2025, a research initiative conducted in collaboration with Project The Habitats Trust. The project aims to identify, track, and study the conservation prospects of small wild cat species in the Aravalli region. The research is being carried out by a team led by Sunil Harsana, Nitesh Kaushik, and Saurabh Harsana.

Nocturnal and Elusive
According to researchers, the Asian Wild Cat is highly alert and primarily nocturnal. It prefers to avoid human activity, making its sighting in the urban-pressure zone of Mangar Bani a strong indicator that the area still maintains a healthy natural balance. Experts emphasize that this species plays a key role in controlling smaller animals, which is essential for the overall health of the ecosystem.

However, the team warns that increasing urbanization, expanding road networks, and mining activities in the Aravallis pose serious threats to wildlife habitats.

Other Rare Species in the Area
Mangar Bani has previously been home to several rare wildlife species, including the Susty Spotted Cat. Archaeological surveys have also unearthed several prehistoric artifacts and cave paintings, highlighting the region’s ecological and historical importance. The sighting of the Asian Wild Cat reinforces the message that protecting key areas can allow biodiversity to thrive naturally. Environmental experts have called this discovery both a warning and an opportunity for conservation efforts, sparking discussions on safeguarding Mangar Bani’s fragile ecosystem.
