Ranchi Prepares to Tackle Stray Dog Problem: 53 Feeding Zones Planned, New Shelter in the Works

Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) has launched a major initiative to create 53 designated dog feeding zones across the city’s wards. The move aims to manage the growing stray dog population while ensuring that they are fed regularly without obstructing public spaces.

Full Story:

Following recent Supreme Court directives instructing the relocation of stray animals from public spaces, the RMC has taken proactive steps to control the increasing number of stray dogs in the city. Under the plan, every ward will have a designated feeding zone to maintain regular feeding schedules and prevent public inconvenience.

Dr. Kiran Kumari, Assistant Public Health Officer at RMC, said that out of the 53 planned zones, around 20 locations have already been finalized, with the selection process for the remaining areas ongoing. The zones are expected to become operational by December. Site selection will be based on multiple criteria, including the concentration of stray dogs and availability of land.

Assessment of Stray Dogs and Feeders

Each ward will undergo a detailed survey to assess the number of stray dogs and dog feeders. The feeding zones will primarily be established in areas with the highest dog density. Dr. Kumari acknowledged that ensuring dogs feed exclusively within these zones will be challenging initially, but experience from feeding representatives indicates that stray dogs gradually adapt to locations where food is consistently available. Over time, the system is expected to streamline effectively.

Plans for a New Shelter

In addition to feeding zones, the RMC is planning to expand its existing dog hospital in Chutia and construct a new shelter capable of accommodating 50–100 stray dogs. The corporation has begun the search for an acre of land to set up this facility and will soon conduct a third-party survey to accurately estimate the stray dog population.

This initiative demonstrates RMC’s commitment to implementing Supreme Court guidelines while balancing public safety, animal welfare, and urban cleanliness.
