In a significant achievement after a prolonged and challenging operation, the Ranchi Police have successfully rescued 12-year-old Kanhaiya Kumar, who had been missing for over two months. The child was recovered safely from the Chandwara area of Koderma district, bringing immense relief to his family and marking a major victory for law enforcement.
Kanhaiya, a resident of Shankar Ghat (Sildiri) under the Ormanjhi police station area, went missing under mysterious circumstances on the evening of November 22 last year. The case triggered widespread concern and prompted the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the direct supervision of Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police Rakesh Ranjan.
Relentless Search Across States
The 61-day-long operation, codenamed Operation Kanhaiya, involved intensive technical surveillance, ground intelligence, and coordinated raids across multiple states. Police teams conducted searches not only in several districts of Jharkhand—including Ramgarh, Lohardaga, Gumla, and Palamu—but also extended their investigation to Bihar (Aurangabad), Rajasthan (Jaipur), Maharashtra (Mumbai), West Bengal, and Delhi.
Persistent efforts and crucial leads eventually guided the police to Koderma, where the child was traced and rescued without any physical harm.
Human Trafficking Angle Emerges
The investigation took a critical turn when links emerged with an inter-state human trafficking gang operating from Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh. This gang had earlier surfaced in cases involving missing children from Dhurwa in Ranchi. Interrogation of arrested members from that network provided vital clues that helped the police close in on Kanhaiya’s location.
Officials believe the case could expose a wider trafficking network operating across Jharkhand and neighboring states, with vulnerable children being targeted systematically.
Suspects Detained, Probe Continues
During the course of the operation, several suspects were detained from areas including Silli and Ramgarh. Police suspect the involvement of local intermediaries and members of so-called “Gulguliya” families, who allegedly acted as informers or facilitators for trafficking gangs.
Senior police officials stated that further arrests are likely as the investigation continues, and strict action will be taken against all those involved.
The successful conclusion of Operation Kanhaiya not only reunited a child with his family but also reinforced public confidence in the police force’s resolve to combat child abduction and human trafficking through sustained, intelligence-driven action.
