Ram Temple Flag Rejected by Defence Ministry; Why Is the Indian Army Assisting in the Ceremony

Ayodhya: Preparations are underway in Ayodhya for the grand flag-hoisting ceremony on 25 November, during which Prime Minister Narendra Modi will unfurl the main flag atop the newly constructed Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple. The sacred flag—known as the Dharmadhwaja or Surya Dhwaja—is central to the event. However, the initial flag prepared for the ceremony has been rejected based on recommendations from the Ministry of Defence.

Why Was the Original Flag Rejected?

The temple construction committee had originally approved a flag weighing 11 kilograms, designed using parachute fabric capable of withstanding winds up to 60 km/h. But during trial runs, significant issues emerged—primarily related to the weight, including rope tension failures.

Following these observations, the Defence Ministry advised that the weight be reduced to ensure safe and smooth hoisting at such great height. Acting on this, the Ram Temple Trust decided to return the earlier flag and commission a new one as per the revised specifications.

Specifications of the New Flag

  • Weight: Approximately 2.5 kilograms
  • Material: A nylon-silk mixed polymer—lightweight, durable, and weather-resistant
  • Dimensions: 22 feet long and 11 feet wide
  • Rotation: Designed to rotate 360 degrees atop the 205-foot temple summit
  • Lifespan: Around 3 years, after which it will be replaced

The flag pole is a separate structure weighing 5.5 tonnes and standing 44 feet tall, brought from Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

The flag features symbols of the Sun (Surya), Om, and the Kovidar tree, inspired by references in the Valmiki Ramayana.

Why Is the Indian Army Involved?

The involvement of the Indian Army might raise questions, but its role is rooted in expertise. Hoisting a massive flag at such height comes with several technical and safety challenges. The Army has extensive experience in handling heavy, large-scale flags on high structures and ensuring flawless execution.

Key reasons for Army support include:

  • Managing the complex weight dynamics of the flag
  • Ensuring precision and safety during the hoisting
  • Conducting pre-event rehearsals with trained personnel
  • Applying technical expertise to prevent any mishap during the live ceremony

With the Army’s assistance, the ceremony is expected to proceed seamlessly when PM Modi unfurls the flag on 25 November 2025, marking a historic milestone in the completion of the Ram Temple construction.
