Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, while presenting the Union Budget 2026 in Parliament, made a landmark announcement for Haryana. The minister declared that Rakhigarhi, the ancient Harappan site, will be included in India’s list of 15 Iconic Sites, giving it a major boost on the national and international tourism map.
Reviving Ancient Heritage
Rakhigarhi, located in Haryana, is one of the largest and oldest centers of the Indus-Saraswati Civilization, dating back over 6,000 years. Previous excavations at the site have uncovered centuries-old pottery, skeletal remains, women’s ornaments, ancient scripts, and sophisticated water drainage systems, showcasing the advanced urban planning of the civilization.
Tourism and Cultural Initiatives
To promote tourism, the Finance Minister announced that pathways will be constructed for visitors, local guides will be appointed to provide historical insights, and cultural programs will be organized at the site. These measures aim to make Rakhigarhi a well-recognized heritage destination both nationally and internationally.
Financial Support for Haryana
The Union Budget also announced an additional ₹1.4 lakh crore tax devolution to states, maintaining a 41% share as per the recommendations of the 16th Finance Commission. Haryana, a major contributor to the central exchequer, is set to receive strengthened financial assistance. The funds will support education, healthcare, rural development, roads, and other infrastructure projects across the state.
Government’s Commitment to Heritage Preservation
Rakhigarhi, which had already been allocated ₹500 crore in the 2025-26 budget for global heritage development, now receives a renewed focus, signaling the government’s serious commitment to preserving and promoting India’s ancient civilization.
