Meerut, Uttar Pradesh: Rakesh Tikait, National Spokesperson of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), has strongly opposed the strict pollution-control and green regulations being implemented in the National Capital Region (NCR). He warned that if NCR is sealed from January 1 and farmers’ vehicles are fined for entry into Delhi, the farmers will not tolerate it.
Farmers Refuse to Pay Fines
Tikait declared that any fines imposed on farmers’ vehicles will not be paid. He emphasized in strong terms that “if our vehicles are fined, they will face consequences.” His statement has caused ripples in political and administrative circles.
Thousands of Fines Already Issued
Tikait claimed that nearly 35,000 vehicles have been fined in Delhi over the past two days, with some penalties reaching ₹20,000 each. He questioned why trucks transporting industrial and municipal waste from Meerut and Muzaffarnagar into Delhi are not strictly regulated, despite being major contributors to pollution.
Delhi Trucks Won’t Return, Says Tikait
Criticizing the sealing of old vehicles as unfair, Tikait warned that if Delhi trucks cross into factories in Muzaffarnagar, they will not be allowed to return. He alleged that while the government promotes “Green UP” and “Clean UP,” the ground reality is contrary to these slogans.
Impact on Common Citizens
Tikait cited the example of vehicles belonging to the judiciary, lawyers, and journalists, which typically cover less than 5,000 km annually, yet owners face fines of ₹30,000–40,000 under the green rules. He highlighted that ordinary citizens’ vehicles are rendered unusable after ten years despite minimal usage.
Farmers’ Crops Cheap, Land Expensive
Tikait also criticized national economic policies, claiming that India is moving towards a capitalist system favoring industrialists while farmers face rising land prices without corresponding increases in crop prices. He accused the government of a deliberate strategy to dispossess farmers of their land.
