Mussoorie: A teacher remains a teacher, no matter the setting. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh proved this at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) in Mussoorie on Saturday, where he engaged with over 600 trainee IAS officers.
During the session, Rajnath Singh used a simple mathematical problem to underline the importance of faith and trust in solving problems.
He posed the following question to the officers:
“A person had a certain sum of money. He gave half of it to A, one-third to B, and the remaining amount of 100 to C. What was the total sum?”
Several trainees attempted to solve it but struggled. One answered 3,000, which the minister gently corrected as wrong. Another trainee answered 600, to which Rajnath Singh nodded approvingly, saying, “Absolutely correct.”
He then explained the solution in a simple manner:
- Let the total sum be A.
- Amount given to A = A/2
- Amount given to B = A/3
- Total given = A/2 + A/3 = 5A/6
- Remaining amount = A – 5A/6 = 100 → A = 600
After solving the problem, Rajnath Singh linked the exercise to faith and trust, saying that while this was a mathematical problem, in life, belief and confidence often help find solutions to complex challenges.
The session highlighted how even the most logical exercises can provide lessons in human values, guiding future bureaucrats to approach problems with both reason and conviction.
