Rajendra Setu Railway Line Doubled Across the Ganga, Boosting Connectivity Between North and South Bihar

Patna:
A major milestone in Bihar’s railway infrastructure has been achieved with the completion of a new double-track railway bridge parallel to the historic Rajendra Setu over the River Ganga. Constructed by IRCON International, the project is expected to significantly improve rail connectivity between Mokama and Barauni while reducing travel time and operational delays.

For decades, the Barauni–Mokama rail section functioned on a single line, forcing trains to halt for hours at outer signals for crossing. With the commissioning of the double track, this long-standing problem has now been resolved. Railway officials estimate that passengers will save nearly two hours of travel time, while train movement will become smoother and faster.

The development will particularly benefit trains heading towards West Bengal, Jharkhand, and the North-Eastern states, enhancing both passenger convenience and freight efficiency.

Historic “Golden Joint” Completed on Republic Day

The final phase of construction was successfully completed on the evening of January 26, 2026, marking a historic moment with the installation of the last structural segment, known as the “Golden Joint.” Engineers and workers of IRCON celebrated the achievement, calling it a proud moment for Indian railway engineering.

Celebrations Mark Completion

To commemorate the completion, a grand fireworks display and light show was organized at the construction site. Hundreds of local residents gathered along the banks of the Ganga to witness the spectacle. Villagers and officials alike praised the dedication and hard work of the engineers and construction teams.

Catalyst for Regional Development

The new bridge is expected to act as a catalyst for economic growth by easing pressure on the old Rajendra Setu. It will strengthen trade and freight movement between industrial hubs of North Bihar and commercial markets of South Bihar, thereby accelerating regional development.

With this achievement, Bihar takes a significant step forward toward modern, efficient, and future-ready railway infrastructure.
