Sikar, Rajasthan: In a remarkable display of humanity and social responsibility, the transgender community of Fatehpur, Sikar district, participated in a wedding ceremony by performing the traditional ‘Mayra’ ritual, led by Poonam, also known as Reshma Bhuaji Khandelwal. Members of the community presented cash, gold and silver ornaments, and clothes as part of the ceremony, leaving the attendees impressed.

Transgender Community Honors Tradition

Typically known for their performances at festive occasions, the transgender community this time prioritized tradition and social customs. Poonam aka Reshma Bhuaji personally carried out the ‘Bhat Bharna’ ritual, which is a significant part of the Mayra ceremony. The wedding of Dharm Behan Taramani Prajapat’s daughter saw the community arrive with music, dancing, and Thar vehicles, formally completing the Mayra ritual.

People present at the ceremony lauded the initiative, describing it as an example of humanity, empathy, and social engagement. This is not the first instance where the transgender community has participated in a Mayra ritual at a wedding. Transgender members from Lakshmibai, Laxmangarh, Sikar, Navalgarh, and Ramgarh regions also attended the celebration, contributing to its success.

In Rajasthan, ‘Mayra’ or ‘Bhat’ is a highly significant traditional ritual performed during weddings and other auspicious occasions. Traditionally, it is the responsibility of the maternal relatives (Nanihal side) to offer gifts and support to the bride’s family. The maternal uncle (Mama) provides gifts and financial assistance to ensure that the wedding proceeds smoothly. The ritual symbolizes affection, blessings, and familial responsibility, ensuring that no shortage hampers the marriage celebrations.
