Jaipur: The Rajasthan government has gone into strict enforcement mode following the recent fatal accident in Jaipur’s Harmada area. In a major crackdown on traffic violations, the government has announced that driving a car or bike above 60 km/h within city limits will now lead to an FIR, not just a challan. What’s more — even the first offence could result in cancellation of your driving license.
Until now, overspeeding in urban areas was punishable only by a fine. However, after the tragic Harmada incident, Jaipur Traffic Police has decided to take stronger legal action against offenders to curb reckless driving.
First Violation Will Cost You Your License
Previously, traffic police would impose fines for the first few offences and recommend license cancellation only for repeat violators. Now, Jaipur Traffic DCP Sumit Mehrotra has confirmed that even a single violation — like overspeeding or drunk driving — will prompt police to send a proposal to the RTO for immediate license cancellation.
Over-Speeding Rampant on JLN Marg
Authorities have received multiple complaints of vehicles speeding excessively on major city roads. On Jawaharlal Nehru (JLN) Marg, one of the city’s busiest and most VIP routes, cars and bikes are often seen touching 100 km/h or more. Jaipur Traffic Police currently issues nearly 1,000 challans daily for overspeeding, but officials say the coming days will see much stricter action under the new rules.
FIR to Be Registered via Vehicle Number
With CCTV surveillance and automatic speed-detection systems installed across most major roads in Jaipur, traffic police can now monitor vehicles in real time. Any vehicle found overspeeding will be traced through its registration number, and an FIR will be registered against the vehicle owner.
Officials have urged the public to follow traffic rules strictly, emphasizing that overspeeding is not just a violation but a potential threat to life. The new policy aims to instill discipline, accountability, and road safety awareness among Jaipur’s motorists.
