Jaipur, Rajasthan – The Rajasthan Transport Department has intensified action against the 7-digit VIP vehicle number scam, which allegedly involves around ₹500 crore. The Jaipur RTO has blacklisted 2,129 vehicle registration certificates (RCs) and issued notices to the respective owners, summoning them for physical verification at the Jaipur RTO office. Vehicle owners are required to appear on December 24, 25, and 26 at the Jagatpura RTO office.
Verification Mandatory or FIR Will Be Filed
Across Rajasthan, more than 10,000 vehicles were allegedly allotted 7-digit numbers through fraudulent backlogs. Jaipur district officials are also implicated, accused of colluding to issue thousands of registration numbers illegally. Owners of suspicious 7-digit number vehicles must provide valid documents proving the basis of their number allocation. Failure to present these documents will result in an FIR being registered against them.
Background of the Scam
The scam involves registration series that were closed by the Transport Department prior to 1989, meaning these numbers were no longer eligible for allocation. However, corrupt officials allegedly reissued these closed series numbers, extending expired three-digit vehicle registrations arbitrarily. Old mopeds and other vehicles were registered using these backlogged numbers, while numbers from scrapped vehicles were reassigned and sold. To conceal the fraud, official records were reportedly tampered with or removed from RTO offices.
VIP Numbers Bought by Politicians and Industrialists
Investigation reveals that several MPs, MLAs, officials, and industrialists purchased these coveted 7-digit VIP numbers. The Jaipur RTO first uncovered the irregularities seven months ago, which triggered a wider investigation by the Transport Department across multiple districts. Preliminary inquiry estimates the scam to involve ₹500 crore, highlighting large-scale malpractice within the system.
Authorities have reiterated that strict action will continue, and all vehicle owners summoned must cooperate with physical verification, or face legal consequences.
This step is seen as a significant move toward curbing corruption in vehicle registration and ensuring accountability within the Rajasthan Transport Department.
