Rajasthan Roadways to Tackle Driver Shortage by Rehiring Retired Drivers on Contract

In a significant move to address the acute shortage of drivers, the Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation (RSRTC) has decided to reappoint retired drivers on a contractual basis. The decision aims to restore smooth bus operations across the state and curb revenue losses caused by the cancellation of services on several routes.

According to officials, a large number of RSRTC buses have been unable to operate regularly due to a shortage of drivers, leading to inconvenience for passengers and substantial financial losses for the corporation. To overcome this crisis, RSRTC has opted to bring back experienced retired drivers and other eligible personnel on fixed-salary contracts.

RSRTC Chairman Shubha Singh said that retired drivers up to the age of 65 years, holding valid driving licences and having a clean service record, would be considered for reappointment. These drivers will be deployed at various depots across the state, depending on operational requirements.

He added that several depots are currently functioning with fewer drivers than required, forcing the corporation to cancel bus services on multiple routes. “The re-engagement of experienced retired drivers will significantly strengthen operations, ensure better service delivery to passengers and help the corporation minimise revenue losses,” Singh said.

Under the new arrangement, interested retired personnel will be required to submit copies of their retirement orders, Pension Payment Order (PPO), valid driving licence, an affidavit and other necessary documents at the concerned unit or depot. After verification of documents, eligible candidates will be appointed on a contractual basis with a fixed salary.

The move is expected to provide immediate relief to Rajasthan Roadways while also offering retired drivers an opportunity to return to service and contribute their experience to the public transport system.
