Nagaur, Rajasthan: Farmers in Rajasthan are gearing up for a major protest, with a large-scale march to Jaipur scheduled for January 8. The move comes after a massive farmers’ assembly in Merta, Nagaur, where participants expressed their dissatisfaction over pending demands and outlined a 12-point charter of grievances.
Key Issues Driving the Protest
At the Mahapanchayat, farmers voiced strong anger over inadequate compensation for crops damaged by excessive rainfall. According to the protesters, only 57 villages were included in the relief list, while 74 villages remain deprived of compensation, fueling widespread frustration.
Land Acquisition Dispute
Another critical concern raised was the Pushkar-Merta railway line expansion project. Farmers protested against land acquisition at rates set by the District Level Committee (DLC), claiming the current compensation is far below market value, causing significant financial losses.
Failed Negotiations with Officials
Despite holding discussions with administrative authorities during the Mahapanchayat, no agreement could be reached. Following the unsuccessful talks, farmers resolved to intensify their movement, planning a massive tractor march to Jaipur to demonstrate their demands.
Administrative Preparations Underway
The announcement of the Jaipur march has prompted administrative circles to ramp up preparations, including traffic management and crowd control measures. Meanwhile, farmer organizations have made it clear that their agitation will continue until concrete decisions are made on their demands.
Farmers Issue a Stern Warning
Leaders emphasized that this protest is not merely symbolic but a determined struggle for their rights. They warned that if the government does not act promptly, the agitation could expand further, posing a significant challenge to both the state administration and political leadership.
