Jaipur: The Rajasthan Assembly’s Budget Session is scheduled to begin on 28 January 2026. Following the Governor’s approval, the Assembly Secretariat has issued a notification, and all legislators have received formal communication regarding the session. The session will continue until March, during which the government is expected to present its achievements, outline its policy agenda, and set priorities for the upcoming financial year.
Governor’s Address to Mark Opening
The session will commence with the Governor’s address on 28 January, highlighting the government’s accomplishments and policy initiatives. On the first day, the House will pay tribute to deceased leaders before adjourning. The Business Advisory Committee (BAC) will also meet on the same day to finalize the schedule and agenda of proceedings for the session.
Debates and Proposed Adjournment
The discussion on the Governor’s address is expected to last three to four days, after which the government will respond. A short recess of approximately one week may follow, after which detailed deliberations on the budget and legislative business will begin.
Budget Likely in Second Week of February
Sources indicate that the state budget could be presented in the second week of February, although a final date is yet to be confirmed. The budget is expected to include announcements of new schemes and programs, along with potential expansions of existing initiatives.
Two-Child Norm Bill to Be Introduced
During the session, the government plans to introduce a significant bill related to Panchayati Raj and urban local body elections. Two separate amendments—one to the Panchayati Raj Act and another to the Municipality Act—will aim to remove the two-child eligibility restriction for contesting local elections. The draft bills have already been prepared. Additionally, more than half a dozen other bills are likely to be tabled during the session.
Opposition Signals Aggressive Stance
Political tensions are expected to run high during this session. Leader of the Opposition, Tikarama Jooli, stated that the Congress legislative party will hold the government accountable on all fronts. He described the session as a report card on the government’s two-year performance and criticized the ruling party for routinely making grand budget announcements without ensuring their feasibility. According to Jooli, this is the first time that the practicality of budget promises will be thoroughly scrutinized.
