Rajasthan Assembly Approves ₹10 Lakh Compensation for Deaths in Wildlife Attacks; ‘Oran’ Lands and Khejri Trees Become Hot Debate

Jaipur, February 3, 2026: The Rajasthan Legislative Assembly witnessed a session dominated by wildlife conservation and environmental concerns today. While the government announced increased financial support for families affected by wildlife-related deaths, legislators also raised urgent issues regarding the protection of Khejri trees and the misuse of Oran and grazing lands.

Compensation Doubled to ₹10 Lakh
Responding to a query from Jaswant Gurjar, BJP MLA from Bari (Dholpur), Forest Minister Sanjay Sharma announced that the government will double the compensation for deaths caused by human-wildlife conflicts from ₹5 lakh to ₹10 lakh. “This step aims to provide significant relief to families affected by the increasing incidents of wildlife attacks,” the minister stated. He added that amendments to the relevant rules are underway to implement the change swiftly.

Oran Lands and Khejri Trees Under Threat
During Zero Hour, Chotu Singh Bhati, BJP MLA from Jaisalmer, raised serious concerns over the unchecked actions of solar companies in western Rajasthan. He alleged that companies have been allocated Oran lands—traditionally used for community grazing and religious purposes—as well as village roads in violation of regulations. Bhati also highlighted rampant felling of the iconic Khejri trees, calling it “a grave threat to the heritage and environment of Marudhara.” He demanded immediate action to reclaim Oran and grazing lands from the companies and halt environmental degradation in the region.

The session underscored the growing need for balancing development with ecological and community rights, putting both wildlife protection and sustainable land use at the forefront of legislative discussions in Rajasthan.
