Indore: Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, visited Indore’s Bhagirathpura area on Saturday to meet families affected by the contaminated water tragedy that has claimed 24 lives. After meeting patients admitted at Bombay Hospital, Gandhi walked through the narrow lanes of the locality to personally console the bereaved families.
Rahul Gandhi spent nearly 15 minutes at Bombay Hospital, where he interacted with patients undergoing treatment after falling ill due to contaminated water. He enquired about their health and assured them of all possible support. Senior Congress leaders Digvijaya Singh, state Congress president Jitu Patwari, Leader of the Opposition Umang Singhar, and former Chief Minister Kamal Nath accompanied him. For security reasons, several senior leaders were stopped outside the hospital premises.
Following the hospital visit, Gandhi proceeded to Bhagirathpura, where he met the families of those who lost their lives. He first visited the residence of the late Geeta Bai and later met the family of Jeevan Mali, both of whom reportedly died after consuming polluted water. During the visit, a brief moment of discomfort was witnessed as crowd pressure increased, leaving Gandhi visibly upset.
Rahul Gandhi is also scheduled to meet the family of five-month-old Avyaan at Sanskar Garden, along with other affected families. The Congress party has submitted a list of four households to the administration for focused outreach.
In a major announcement, the Congress declared financial assistance of ₹1 lakh each for the families of all 24 victims who lost their lives in the contaminated water incident. Gandhi emphasized the need for accountability and assured the victims’ families that their struggle for justice would not be ignored.
The visit underscored the Congress leadership’s attempt to draw attention to the human cost of administrative lapses and to stand in solidarity with those affected by the tragedy.
