Rabri Devi to Vacate 10 Circular Road Residence: A Home of Sweet and Sour Memories for Lalu Family

Patna, Bihar: After a significant defeat in the 2025 Assembly elections, the RJD has faced another challenge—Rabri Devi has been served a notice to vacate her longtime residence at 10, Circular Road. She has now been allocated a new residence at 39, Harding Road in her capacity as the Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council.

For the past 20 years, Rabri Devi and her family lived at 10, Circular Road. Initially, both she and Lalu Prasad Yadav were reluctant to move there. It was only after much controversy that Rabri Devi shifted in with her family. Over the years, the residence has witnessed both joyous and difficult moments for the family.

Notice to Vacate the Chief Minister’s Residence

Following the swearing-in of Nitish Kumar as Chief Minister on 24 November 2005, Rabri Devi had to vacate the official CM residence at 1, Aney Marg. She was allocated 10, Circular Road as an alternative. However, the family did not move out of the CM residence within the stipulated time, prompting the Bihar Building Construction Department to issue a strict notice, warning of forcible eviction if compliance was delayed.

Lalu Yadav’s Reaction to the Notice

Lalu Yadav expressed outrage at the language of the notice, accusing Nitish Kumar of acting with vindictive intent. The family’s delay in vacating the CM house was due to two reasons: the inauspicious timing (Kharmaas period) and ongoing repair work at the newly allotted 10, Circular Road residence. Additionally, the residence was being modified to meet Z-plus security standards because Lalu Yadav, then Railway Minister, had such protection.

A Legendary Story at the CM House

In 2005, when asked about moving into the CM residence, Nitish Kumar remarked that it was unfortunate that officials had to instruct outgoing leaders to vacate. Upon moving in, he noticed small packets in the walls and some soil dug from the campus. Lalu Yadav humorously told him, “We left ghosts in the CM house,” which Nitish Kumar firmly rejected.

Sweet Memories at 10 Circular Road

The residence has been the cradle of many political milestones for the Lalu family. Rabri Devi and Lalu launched their sons Tej Pratap Yadav and Tejashwi Yadav into politics from here in 2013. The family successfully installed Tejashwi as Deputy Chief Minister in 2015, while Tej Pratap became a minister. Misa Bharti was sent to the Rajya Sabha in 2016 and later became MP from Patliputra in 2024. Rabri Devi also assumed her role as Leader of Opposition while living here.

Bitter Memories at 10 Circular Road

The residence also witnessed hardships. Tej Pratap’s marriage in May 2018 ended in divorce six months later. In December 2019, Aishwarya Rai, Rabri Devi’s daughter-in-law, left the house in distress alleging mistreatment. Most recently, after the 2025 Assembly defeat, Rohini Acharya, another family member, left the house in tears, accusing Tejashwi Yadav.

10, Circular Road remains a home of both joy and sorrow, reflecting the triumphs and trials of the Lalu-Rabri family over two decades.
