Bhopal: A recently constructed 1.8-kilometre cement road in Bhopal, built at a cost of ₹3 crore by the Public Works Department (PWD), has now become a serious environmental and safety hazard. During construction, concrete was poured directly around the roots of mature trees, restricting their ability to breathe and absorb water and nutrients. Experts warn that many of these trees could collapse within the next 2–5 years, posing a danger to pedestrians and motorists.
Road Connects SoS to Awadhpuri:
The road was intended to provide smoother connectivity between SoS and Awadhpuri. However, the construction methodology has caused irreparable damage to older trees. Trees like neem, peepal, and banyan, which take decades to mature, now face severe stress due to blocked access to oxygen, water, and nutrients. Environmentalist Rashid Khan warns, “Pouring concrete around tree roots slowly suffocates them. This not only harms the environment but also invites future accidents.”
Residents Voice Concerns:
Local residents have expressed anger and frustration. Aarti Patel said, “These trees have provided shade for over 30 years. Now, with no breeze and scorching sunlight, it’s difficult for children to play nearby.” Another passerby, Prashant Kumar, noted, “The road may be better, but if a tree falls during rain, chaos will follow. We pay taxes for development, not destruction.” Elderly resident Ram Verma lamented, “These trees were like family; concrete has killed their roots overnight. Who thinks about our health or the birds’ homes?”
PWD Remains Silent:
Attempts to contact PWD Chief Engineer Sanjay Maske went unanswered. Environmentalists warn that the long-term consequences could include increased urban temperatures, reduced biodiversity, and additional costs in the future for removing dead trees and planting replacements.
Key Points:
- PWD contractors poured concrete around tree roots without leaving space for oxygen and water, suffocating the trees.
- According to Rashid Khan, fungal growth in the roots could hollow the trees from inside, making them vulnerable to falling even in mild storms.
- The concrete not only increases local temperatures but could also lead to millions in additional costs for future tree removal and replanting.
This project raises serious questions about urban planning practices and the prioritization of infrastructure over ecological preservation in Bhopal.
