Punjab Local Body Elections: AAP Sweeps Rural Areas, Wins 70% of Seats; Kejriwal Hails Major Victory

Chandigarh: Arvind Kejriwal, National Convener of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), praised the Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government following the party’s sweeping victory in the state’s local body elections. Speaking at a press conference alongside Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Kejriwal said the elections in Punjab were conducted in a completely fair manner.

“No election could have been more impartial than this. The results show AAP’s strong performance and the public’s satisfaction with the work of the Mann government,” Kejriwal said. “The party has won 70% of the seats in rural areas, which is a clear indication of AAP’s growing influence in the countryside. This is a major achievement and reflects the trust people have in our governance.”

Kejriwal attributed the party’s success to the development work carried out by the state government. “The people’s approval is rooted in tangible achievements such as Mohalla Clinics, well-maintained roads, strict action against drug abuse, and free electricity. These initiatives have resonated strongly with the rural population,” he added.

He also addressed comparisons with past elections, noting, “Some are comparing this with the 2012 Akali Dal government. That’s not appropriate. Our government has completed only one year in office before this victory. Moreover, unlike the 2013 and 2018 elections, which were marred by authoritarian practices, the current elections were fully fair.”

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, speaking at the same event, emphasized that the next elections would also focus on development. “In 2027, we will seek votes based on our work and progress,” he said.

The results signal a strong pro-incumbency wave in Punjab, reflecting widespread public satisfaction with the current government’s governance and developmental initiatives.
