Punjab Police Rescues TV Journalist Kidnapped by Three Men Disguised as Nihang Sikhs


Mohali, Punjab: In a dramatic turn of events, three men disguised as Nihang Sikhs abducted a TV journalist in Mohali on Tuesday evening. The journalist, Gurpiyar Singh, was held hostage at a Gurdwara in Kotkapura, Faridkot district, but Punjab Police successfully rescued him within 12 hours of the abduction. One suspect has been arrested, while two others remain at large.

Abduction Linked to Financial Dispute

According to SSP Harmandeep Singh Hans, the journalist was abducted at around 7 PM outside his office in Nayagaon. Investigations revealed that the kidnapping stemmed from a financial dispute. The suspects had previously sought Gurpiyar Singh’s help in a property-related matter and had collected some funds on his behalf. When Gurpiyar refused to pay their share of the amount, they resorted to abduction.

Police Action and Arrest

The police quickly formed special task forces under the direction of Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav and DIG Ropar Range Nanak Singh. The arrested suspect has been identified as 45-year-old Balkaranjit Singh from Rekh Kalan village, Bathinda district. He is unmarried and has completed education up to the 10th grade. Two other suspects, Hardeep Singh and Jaskaran Singh, are still at large, with police actively conducting raids to apprehend them.

Complaint and Rescue Operation

The abduction was reported by Gurpiyar Singh’s sister, Manpreet Kaur, after the journalist was forcibly taken by the disguised suspects. The police immediately mobilized Mohali Police, Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF), and teams from Faridkot, Bathinda, and Chandigarh. Gurpiyar Singh was safely rescued approximately 200 kilometers away from the Gurdwara where he was held.

SSP’s Statement

SSP Hans emphasized, “No one is above the law. Abduction, whether over financial disputes or personal matters, is a serious crime. The remaining suspects will soon be apprehended. Police are also investigating whether the suspects misused the Nihang identity to evade surveillance.”

This incident highlights the swift and coordinated action by Punjab Police, ensuring the safety of citizens while cracking down on criminal activity.
